Hallo! 👋 Let’s master dir vs Ihnen (in tiny, friendly steps)

In German, greetings are easy… until you meet the two “you”s:

  • du (informal) → used with friends, classmates, kids
  • Sie (formal) → used with strangers, teachers, customers, older people (when you want to be polite)

Today you’ll practice one super useful pair:

  • dir = “to you” (informal, for du)
  • Ihnen = “to you” (formal, for Sie)

1) The idea in one sentence

When you say “How are you?” in German, you often use:

  • Wie geht es dir? (to you = dir, informal)
  • Wie geht es Ihnen? (to you = Ihnen, formal)

Why “to you”? Because the phrase is literally like: “How goes it to you?”

2) Quick matching: du ↔ dir, Sie ↔ Ihnen

Think of it as a mini pair system:

  • dudir
  • SieIhnen

Also notice:

  • Sie is capitalized (formal “you”)
  • Ihnen is also capitalized (because it belongs to formal Sie)

3) Tiny pronunciation tip (optional but helpful)

  • dir sounds like “deer” (soft d)
  • Ihnen sounds like “EE-nen” (long ee at the start)

Micro‑Writing Worksheet (6 one‑line replies)

Write one short line for B each time. Choose dir or Ihnen (and a friendly reply).

  1. A: Hallo! Wie geht es dir?
    B: ______________________________

  2. A: Guten Tag. Wie geht es Ihnen?
    B: ______________________________

  3. A: Hi! Wie geht’s dir heute?
    B: ______________________________

  4. A: Guten Morgen. Wie geht es Ihnen heute?
    B: ______________________________

  5. A: Hallo, Frau Keller. Wie geht es Ihnen?
    B: ______________________________

  6. A: Hey Tom! Wie geht es dir?
    B: ______________________________

Answer Key + Arabic “Why?” (dir vs Ihnen)

Below are sample correct answers. Yours can be different—as long as dir/Ihnen matches the situation.

  1. B: Mir geht’s gut, danke! Und dir?

  2. B: Danke, mir geht es gut. Und Ihnen?

  3. B: Ganz gut, danke!

  4. B: Es geht mir sehr gut, danke. Und Ihnen?

  5. B: Mir geht es gut, danke schön. Und Ihnen?

  6. B: Super! Und dir?

Self‑Check (quick and friendly)

After you write, check these 3 things:

  1. Greeting chosen:

    • Hallo/Hi/Hey =
    • Guten Tag / Guten Morgen =
  2. du/Sie correct:

Sie → Ihnen
  3. Punctuation + Capitalization:

Tom, Frau Keller).

Tiny takeaway

If you remember just one thing: du → dir and Sie → Ihnen.
Practice these a few times, and your German will instantly sound more natural—and more polite when it needs to be.
