Lets do a quick, clear recap of systems in geography. Nice and simple. Deep breath. Lets go. First: three system types. An open system exchanges both energy and matter with its surroundings. A closed system exchanges energy, but not matter. An isolated system exchanges neither energy nor matterand in real life, thats basically imaginary. Like a perfect diet plan. Now lets practice the most important skill: choosing the boundary. Because the boundary is the line you draw around your system. And the boundary you choose changes what counts as an input, an output, and a transfer. Example time. Imagine a river landscape. You can choose the drainage basin as your boundary. Thats the whole area where precipitation drains into one river system. So what are the key inputs? Precipitation is a big one. Water enters the basin. Also energy enters, mainly from the sun, driving evaporation and weather. What are outputs? River discharge leaving the basin at the mouth is an output. Evapotranspiration is also an output of water to the atmosphere. And sediment can leave too. Inside the basin, youd talk about transfers and stores. Like infiltration into soil, groundwater flow, channel flow, and storage in soil moisture. But now choose a smaller boundary: just a river channel reach. So, a short section of the river. Same landscape, different box. Now precipitation might not be your main input. Instead, the main input is water flowing in from upstream. Sediment can enter from upstream too. Outputs are water and sediment flowing out downstream. And exchanges with the banks matter more. Like erosion from the banks into the channel. Or deposition onto the bed. So the big lesson is this: Boundary first. Then everything else makes sense. Now, heres your super-memorable AQA exam tip. Three steps. Step 1: Define. Write one clean sentence defining the system type youre using. Like: “An open system exchanges energy and matter with its surroundings.” Step 2: State the boundary. Be explicit. Say: “In this answer, the system boundary is the drainage basin,” orthe river channel reach.” No guessing. You tell them. Step 3: Identify exchanges. List what crosses the boundary. Inputs, outputsand if it helps, name a couple of transfers and stores inside. Like precipitation in, discharge out, sediment in and out, evapotranspiration out. If you do defineboundaryexchanges, you look organised. And examiners love organised. Even more than they love rivers. Quick pause. And thats your recap.
