Small or already-full stores mean water reaches the river fast. Higher peak. Short lag. Flows are the pathways to the channel. Overland flow is fast. That pushes the rising limb up steeply. Throughflow is slower. That helps keep discharge going after the peak. Groundwater flow is slowest. That supports baseflow and makes the falling limb gentler. Outputs are water leaving the drainage basin system. The big output shown on the hydrograph is river discharge itself. Other outputs like evapotranspiration matter, but they dont spike during the storm the way discharge does. So, hydrograph shape in one simple picture: Rising limb = quick water arriving. Peak discharge = maximum output through the channel. Falling limb = slower stores draining back out. Next: feedback. Positive vs negative. Use these sentence formulas. Positive feedback: “A change causes effects that increase the original change.” Example idea: soil gets saturated, so more overland flow happens, so discharge rises faster, which can lead to even more flooding. Negative feedback: “A change causes effects that reduce the original change.” Example idea: vegetation intercepts rainfall, so less water reaches the ground quickly, so the peak discharge is smaller. Finally: two exam pitfalls to dodge. Pitfall one: confusing discharge as a store. Discharge is not water being held. Its water moving past a point per second. Throughflow is water moving sideways through the soil toward the river. Infiltration is the entry. Throughflow is the journey. Thats it.
