StudyBits Recorder — Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 22, 2026

In short

StudyBits Recorder watches a browser workflow you choose to record and writes it up as a step-by-step guide. Recording happens on your machine and stays there. Nothing is transmitted anywhere until you explicitly send a guide to StudyBits.

What stays on your machine

While you record, the extension stores the following in your own browser, using the browser’s local storage:

  • Screenshots of the visible tab, taken at the moment of each action. A screenshot contains whatever was on screen, including anything personal or confidential that happened to be visible.
  • What you interacted with — the label, role and position of the button or field, and the page address.
  • Narration, if you turn on the microphone, so spoken description can be matched to the step it belongs to.

The extension does not record the values you type. Field names are captured so a step can say which field was filled; the contents are not.

What happens when you send a guide

Sending is a deliberate act: you press a button. At that point the guide — its steps, its prose and its screenshots — is uploaded to your StudyBits workspace over an encrypted connection, using the session you are already signed in with. The extension itself holds no credentials and never authenticates on your behalf.

Once a guide is in StudyBits it is governed by the StudyBits Privacy Policyand by your workspace’s own settings: visible to members of that workspace, and to anyone holding a share link if you choose to publish one.

StudyBits then writes the guide up — turning the recorded actions into readable instructions — using our own model access. Your guide is not used to train any model.

Why it asks for each permission

  • Access to all sites — you choose what to document, and the extension cannot know in advance which site that is. It is idle on every page until you start a recording.
  • Tabs and navigation — to follow a workflow when it moves between tabs or through a single-page app.
  • Scripting — to place the listener that notices your clicks in the tab being recorded.
  • Active tab — to capture the visible tab at the moment of each action.
  • Storage — to hold guides and screenshots in your browser until you send them.
  • Side panel and offscreen documents— the recorder’s own controls, and the host for the microphone.

What it does not do

  • No analytics, telemetry or usage tracking of any kind.
  • No advertising, and no sale or sharing of data with third parties.
  • No third-party AI services. The extension contacts no model provider; the write-up happens in StudyBits after you send a guide.
  • Nothing is captured while you are not recording. No background watching, no browsing history.

Your control

Recordings live in the extension until you delete them or send them. Deleting a guide in the extension removes it and its screenshots from your browser. Removing the extension removes everything it held.

Smart Blur can redact emails, tokens and other patterns before a screenshot leaves your machine, and you can blur any region by hand. Redactions are burned into the image before a guide is sent, not drawn over it.

A guide already in StudyBits is deleted from StudyBits — see the main policy for how to request that.
